I know, I know, it's only October! But the 2026 advent calendars are already in the shops, and the best ones really do sell out long before December. Lots of the luxury calendars are limited editions, so if there's one you've got your eye on, now's the time to grab it.

I've split my favourites into four groups: reusable calendars you fill yourself (my favourite, as they come out year after year), luxury food and drink calendars, jewellery calendars, and a few the kids will love. As always, I've kept the picks to calm, cosy designs that look lovely in a modern new build, along with a few fun, colourful ones because it is Christmas after all!

Reusable Advent Calendars to Fill Yourself

A reusable calendar is a lovely way to start a family tradition, and it cuts down on cardboard and plastic every year. You choose what goes inside, so it works for every age and every budget.

  • Robert Dyas Ivyline Nordic Wooden Advent Calendar (£65.99) – This is the one for a Scandi, neutral scheme. It's made from certified mango wood, and instead of doors you roll a little star along the row of houses to mark each day, tucking a sweet behind each one. At 70cm long it's perfect along a mantelpiece, a media wall shelf or a hallway console. Shop here

  • Fortnum & Mason Santa in Sleigh Unfilled Advent Calendar (£95) – A proper keepsake. This wooden calendar has 24 doors to fill yourself, with an exclusive Fortnum's design of Father Christmas flying over the rooftops on Christmas Eve. It even comes with a sturdy box to store it in when the countdown is over, which I love for keeping decorations in good condition. Shop here

  • Fortnum's Gingerbread House Advent Calendar (£125) – Illustrated as the home of a cheerful pair of gingerbread characters, this one has 24 numbered doors ready for your own treats and treasures. It's a big piece (around 60cm), so it makes a real statement on a sideboard or kitchen island. Shop here

  • Linen and fabric pocket advent calendars on Etsy – For a softer, more Scandi look, a linen or fabric calendar with little pockets is hard to beat. There are lots of handmade versions on Etsy in natural linen, cream and grey, and many sellers will personalise them with a name. Order early, as handmade pieces can take a while to arrive. What to put in a reusable advent calendar

  • Chocolate coins, mini truffles or favourite sweets

  • Little notes, jokes or a festive activity for the day (bake mince pies, watch a Christmas film, write to Father Christmas)

  • Tea bags or hot chocolate sachets for grown-up calendars

  • Tiny decorations to hang on the tree each day

  • Hair clips, stickers or mini toys for little ones

Luxury Food and Drink Advent Calendars

If you'd rather someone else did the filling, these are the foodie calendars I'd be very happy to wake up to. Fortnum & Mason and Daylesford both go all out at Christmas, and Daylesford's calendars are designed to be refilled and reused afterwards too.

  • Fortnum's Feasting Advent Calendar (£265) – The big one! Redesigned for 2026, Fortnum's Feasting calendar takes you on a journey through its famous Foodhall, with something to brew, bake, nibble, stir and share behind each door. Inside you'll find treats like Amalthea Dry and Pink Gin, a flower tea infuser with Christmas black tea and Fortnum's famous teas. A real treat for a foodie (and yes, self-gifting is encouraged!). • Daylesford Farmshop Christmas Advent Calendar (£275) – Daylesford's Farmshop calendar is illustrated in-house and opens to reveal 25 drawers of treats from its Farmshop, from food and drink to candles and decorations. This year's contents include a mini truffle box, Christmas tea, Oxfordshire honey, mini Negroni and Espresso Martini cocktails, a Log Fire candle and a felt decoration. Daylesford describes it as sturdy, so you can refill and reuse it. Shop here

Missoma's advent calendars are always a popular buy, and Missoma says you'll need to move fast. Each one has six exclusive pieces to wear long after Christmas, presented in a velvet jewellery box that you'll keep using too.

These are the ones that will have the little ones racing downstairs every morning in December.

  • Daylesford Winter Workshop Advent Calendar (£120) – Daylesford's merry Winter Workshop calendar is illustrated with the animals on its farm, and behind the doors are 24 hand-iced biscuits baked by Biscuiteers. There's an "ice your own" Christmas tree biscuit for Christmas Eve, which is a lovely little activity for the night before Christmas. Like the Farmshop calendar, it can be refilled and reused. • Cox & Cox Advent Train (£55) – This jolly red train has 24 doors spread through its carriages, ready to fill with small treats, and it's driven by a cheerful snowman. At 50cm long it looks great running along a windowsill or under the tree, and it'll come out every year. Shop here

  • Personalised felt and fabric kids' advent calendars on Etsy – A personalised felt or fabric calendar with your child's name on it is a lovely keepsake. Etsy has lots of handmade designs, from simple felt pockets to little hanging houses. Shop here

And don't forget the dog! Daylesford also has a Dog Advent Calendar (£100), filled with paw balm, edible treats and felt toys.

How to Style Your Advent Calendar in a New Build

  • Make it part of your mantel or media wall. A long, low calendar like the Ivyline one sits beautifully on a floating shelf or mantel with a garland and a few candles.

  • Use the hallway. A console table by the front door is a great spot, and it means everyone sees it on the way out each morning.

  • Keep it calm. If your calendar is colourful, keep everything around it simple with natural greenery, wood and warm white lights.

  • Think about storage. Calendars with their own box, like the Fortnum's Santa in Sleigh, are easy to store in a loft or under-stairs cupboard.

FAQs

When should I buy an advent calendar for 2026?

As soon as you can! Many luxury calendars are limited editions. Daylesford releases its calendars once a year in limited numbers, and Missoma's are only available for a limited time, so the popular ones often sell out by November.

Are reusable advent calendars worth it?

I think so. You pay once and use it every year, you can fill it with exactly what your family loves, and you're not throwing away a cardboard calendar every January.

How many doors does an advent calendar have?

Advent calendars start on 1 December. Most have 24 doors, finishing on Christmas Eve, but some (like Fortnum's Favourites and Daylesford's Farmshop calendar) have 25 so there's a treat on Christmas Day too.
